I-twinning projects bring together a variety of actors: non-profit organizations, NGOs, local associations, social centers, teaching centers, training centers, cultural collectives, libraries, cooperatives, micro-enterprises in the services sector… The idea is simple. At least two groups, one located in Europe and the other in Latin America, come together to create a common

project using computer resources (see examples in the report).

Their collective interests lead to initiatives in numerous fields: education and training; professional and social integration; access to information; democratic participation and citizen rights; health promotion; intercultural exchange; local economic development and fair trade; environmental protection… All these projects take a balanced cooperative approach that enables participants to give as much as they receive from their "twin".

I-twinning projects organize cooperative training and education for the purposes of local development. A common, concrete project that responds to the needs of local organizations is a vehicle of intercultural exchange between the two partners. Resource organisms in their respective areas help them develop the project, providing assistance with the process of mutual discovery and cooperation, and encouraging i-twinning participants to share their experiences and critical observations regarding the operation.

I-twinning projects adapt information and communication technologies to specific communities. In order to collaborate on such projects, partners rely on communication technology, which enables them to work together from a distance. I-twinning projects often directly address the challenge of adapting such technology. Participants can therefore discover, test on a real-life scale and adapt ICT solutions to their needs. In addition, they benefit from a multilingual, collaborative platform of tools accessible via the Internet.
